Arizona Tax Credits Retirees Should Know About
Arizona offers several state income tax credits that many Scottsdale and Phoenix-area retirees may want to review with their tax professional as part of a tax-aware retirement plan. Unlike a deduction, a tax credit generally reduces state income tax on a dollar-for-dollar basis, up to the credit's annual limits.*
Qualifying Charitable Organization (QCO) Credit
Contributions to state-certified Qualifying Charitable Organizations may be eligible for an Arizona state income tax credit. Current limits and the list of certified organizations are published each year by the Arizona Department of Revenue.
Qualifying Foster Care Charitable Organization Credit
A separate credit is available for contributions to Qualifying Foster Care Charitable Organizations. It is claimed independently of the QCO credit, so a taxpayer may be eligible for both in the same year, subject to each credit's limit.
Public School Tax Credit
Fees paid or cash contributions made to an Arizona public school for eligible activities and programs may qualify for a state income tax credit. Retirees without children in school may still be eligible to claim this credit.
Private School Tuition Credits
Arizona also allows credits for contributions to certified School Tuition Organizations (STOs) that fund tuition scholarships at private schools. Both an "original" and a "switcher/PLUS" credit may be available; each has its own annual limit set by the state.
Why This Matters in Retirement
For retirees taking Social Security, RMDs, or portfolio withdrawals, Arizona state income tax can be a meaningful line item. Coordinating charitable giving that is already part of your life with these state credits — alongside federal strategies your CPA reviews — is one way some Arizona retirees work to keep more of what they've saved.
These credits also have specific deadlines and paperwork requirements (including certified organization codes), and limits are updated periodically by the Arizona Department of Revenue. Always confirm current amounts and eligibility with your tax professional before making a contribution.
